Is it time for your portrait?

I love documenting events and life. (A broad statement for sure!)

When I think about it, I tend to spend more time behind the lens than in front of it. Like many of you, I feel comfortable behind the lens.  This past summer I decided it was time to try being in front of the lens.  My short hair was growing in decently, and my youngest (3 at the time) I felt could hold it together for 45 minutes. Priorities, for sure.

So we did it.  I reached out to my friend Amy of Amy Ro Photography to come out one of our favorite spots on Cape Cod for an evening session.  I am so happy we did it AND I am so relieved my kids cooperated.  Because we all know that kids behave better with strangers, right? (This is an important detail)

The reason I share this is because I think that for many people there is a certain uneasiness about being in front of the camera.  That is okay.  It is a bit odd to have your photograph taken, its a natural feeling to feel uneasy.  For some its easier.  I encourage you to break through that barrier and embrace the idea of portraits – of you, your kids, your animals, your family.

You may ask, how often should I subject myself (to this torture) of being in front of the camera? Your negative feelings  may come from a variety of sources. The concerns could be many – worried that the toddler will not cooperate or that the camera adds 10# – I’ve had both of those concerns myself. So the frequency of being in front of the camera? As many times you would like, but perhaps think of this objectively. When the kids are little they change so often. Three months is a big change. As they grow up, a yearly capture makes a lot of sense.

So I encourage you to reach out and book a family photo session.  It can be this summer, this fall, and even in the winter.  Just put it on the books and that way you can plan for it.  I know we will be doing a family session again this year and I’m looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Helen

p.s. Stay posted for an upcoming post on what to do with your family portraits once you have done them.
