Portraiture FAQ

Makadia_101114_2-2Portraiture is big subset of photography.  I enjoy creating a wide range of portraits including newborn, children, and family.  My approach to portraiture is to capture a mix of lifestyle and candid portraits along with a handful of formal and posed portraits.  I work with you before our time together to determine what you goal is for the session. For a newborn session, you may want a mix of large wall prints for your home, along with a small album or all digital files so you can create your own prints.  As your children grow up, you may want to capture them every few months or every year and add to your family gallery wall.  A family session may be a great time to get portraits of the kids for your parents, or to create that large wall canvas of your family for the mantle.  Before your session, we will talk about how to maximize your time so that the end result is a memorable photographic product.

Q: What is included in the portrait session fee?

A: A portrait session fee ($150) {excluding newborns} includes a 60-90 minute session with your immediate family at a mutually agreed location of your choice.  The session will result in an on-line gallery of approximately 25-35 images.  The session fee includes my travel to and from the portrait location, my time during the session, post processing work, and does not include any prints or digital files.

Q: Can you tell me what I should expect from the portrait session experience?

A: As I mentioned earlier, understanding your goal for these images is really important and helps define our experience together.  Once this is clear, we pick a location and we will likely talk about “what to wear”.  Day of the session, I spend time “breaking the ice” –  getting to know your children, you as a couple, or family, because the more comfortable you are, the more comfortable you will be with me and a camera.  I have several posed ideas in mind that I bring to the session from our time planning together and modify along the way. I do encourage that if you are looking for specific poses or looks, please save an idea board on Pinterest and share it with me before our session.  I do not like recreating other photographers’ work but am happy to take a look to get a sense of what you have in mind.  Please keep in mind that being natural and being “you” tends to be a very important ingredient in a successful portrait session.

Boston_Portrait_Photographer_150111_1-2NEWBORN Q&A

Q: What is included in the newborn session fee?

A: A newborn session fee ($250) includes a photo session of roughly 2-3 hours in your home and includes your choice of one {1} digital file for a birth announcement.  Maternity sessions are only available as an add on to a newborn session and are treated as a portrait session {$150}.

Q: What can I expect from the newborn session experience?

A: Newborns are precious and are tiny and sleepy for a limited amount of time, allowing for a narrow window to capture their innocence and beauty. Newborn sessions should be booked in advance of your due date.  We pencil in your due date on my calendar and finalize the date and time once your baby is born.  I do ask that you put me on your contact list so I know when your baby is born and can accommodate your session accordingly.  The session should occur between days 5-14, but can be done anytime in the first three {3} weeks.  If your session occurs at three weeks or later, expect less sleepy, bendy baby pictures.  Generally, captures during our time together include lifestyle candid moments with mom and dad {and any siblings} in your home along with some sleepy, undressed, baby poses.  I aim for my newborn sessions to include the whole family as well as solo newborn posed photographs in your home, such as your master bedroom, the nursery and the living room.  At the time of booking, we can discuss and plan for your session goals and pencil in your due date.

Q: What is your generally photo processing style?

A: After photographs are captured, your images are digitally processed with a timeless style in mind. My color processing focuses on true, bold colors; my black & white conversions are rich with a hint of warmth. I tend to avoid trendy filters a la Instagram, as I feel your images will look dated when you look at your prints and enlargements in the future.

Q: How do I book you for a session?

A: Once we have settled on a date, a signed contract and session fee will hold your date.

Q: What do we wear for a portrait/newborn session?

A: Everyone has this question so you are not alone.  My first rule for what to wear is that you must feel awesome and comfortable in the outfit(s) you have chosen.  For example, if you don’t normally wear 3″ stilettos, chances are you won’t feel comfortable during a photo session while wearing them.  With children, comfort is very important as well.  I know my daughter lives in leggings, so putting her in jeans may not be the best move.  Once you have comfort down, think about what colors work well together, as well as patterns.  Keeping it simple and complementing I think leads to a successful photo session.  I am happy to take a look at color schemes, outfits, etc, so please feel free to reach out.  I also have lots of ideas on some what to wear Pinterest boards so please feel free to take a look at my Pinterest profile.

Boston_Portrait_Photographer_131201_20Q: What happens after the session?

A: When the gallery is ready for viewing, I will contact you to release your online gallery for 7-10 days.  During this 7-10 day time frame, I am available for in-home consultations to examine where images may look best, sizing concerns, and am happy to do an in-person ordering session with you.  I know that your time is limited and sparse, I love to work with you to help you make decisions during this 7-10 day window.  You may place your order online or in-person as previously mentioned.  Once your order is placed, turn around time varies by product purchased and is generally between 7-14 days.

Q: Is there an expected minimum investment?

A: After spending time together during our session, I hope that we have met the goals of your session.  We have invested time together in this session and I want to ensure that you are able to make use of these images.  As a result, I have created print, enlargement, and digital collections options.  I also have an a la carte menu with a minimum purchase amount.  Since I have worked together to my clients to understand the goals of the session, I find most clients invest at a minimum $500, which is my minimum purchase threshold.

Q: What kind of products are available to me?

A: I have a wide range of product available including unframed prints (from gift size to huge wall size), canvas, keepsake books/albums, and digital files.  Please contact me for more information about pricing of products as well as collections.

Q: Do you offer mini-portrait sessions or encourage portrait parties?

A: Yes!  I do offer both on a limited basis.  Please contact me for further information.
